- we usually don't have the money and energy to measure/interview/survey everyone in the population
- often we don't have the luxury of time to include everyone in our study
We usually deal with samples. The process of selecting participants to become members of our sample is known as sampling.
Take the Sampling Methods workshop by Thomson Higher Education.
One type of sampling is probability sampling. But what is probability? Our statistics teachers taught us that it is "the likelihood that an event will occur." View the interactive introduction to probability courtesy of Mrs. Glosser's Math Goodies.
Much of inferential statistics will be about estimating the probability that certain "events" (change in mood, heightened empathy, improved learning, etc.) will occur.
